Doors: Waiting for the Sun

Rhino's High Fidelity series continues to impress with this reissue of The Doors' third album. After releasing a numbered boxed set of all the studio albums, they've made these Kevin Gray remasters available as individual unnumbered releases, and this one showcases exactly why the series has earned its reputation.

Cut from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed at Optimal Media, this is the definitive version of an album that has seen plenty of reissue attempts over the decades. Gray's mastering brings clarity and dimension to tracks that have sometimes sounded murky in previous pressings. "Hello, I Love You" has snap and presence, while deeper cuts like "Spanish Caravan" reveal layered textures that lesser pressings flatten out. The bass is properly represented in the mix without overpowering, and Morrison's vocals sit exactly where they should.

The vinyl itself is dead quiet. Optimal Media does exceptional work here, with surfaces that let you focus on the music rather than surface noise. The gatefold jacket is substantial, and the included insert with recollections from band members and studio personnel adds welcome context without feeling like filler.

What's remarkable about this pressing is how it compares favorably to more expensive audiophile editions. Gray's work rivals the Analogue Productions 45rpm version at a fraction of the cost, and it handily beats earlier Rhino reissues. The decision to boost the high end pays off on an album that benefits from added clarity without sounding artificially brightened.

If you're building a Doors collection or replacing older pressings, this belongs at the top of your list. The Rhino High Fidelity series proves that stellar reissues don't require 45rpm splits or triple digit price tags.

The Verdict Verdict
Essential upgrade for Doors fans. One of the strongest entries in the Rhino High Fidelity series.
