Kenny Burrell: Bluesey Burrell
Original Release: 1963 Moodsville
Reissue: 2022 Analogue Productions Prestige Stereo Series
Jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell released Bluesey Burrell with saxophonist Coleman Hawkins in 1962 on the Moodsville record label. The album was initially received with mediocre reviews. Many critics believing it to be somewhat of a "variety" album, whatever that means. However, the record has withstood the test of time and not unlike many records that have received a lukewarm critical reception, it has gone on to achieve rather impressive commercial success. Proving once again that critics can be out of touch with public taste and what makes for great music.
As a part of their Prestige Stereo Series, Analogue Productions reissued Bluesy Burrell in 2022. Noted for their impressive audiophile releases, with Bluesy Burrell Analogue Productions had to contend with less than perfect source tapes. Mastered from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray, Analogue Productions release of Bluesy Burrell does show evidence of some background noise and pops and clicks. This is something we are not accustom to from Analogue Productions.
Overall, the record sounds great. The musical separation and dynamic range is exceptional. As such, both Coleman Hawkins and Kenny Burrell's musicianship stands front and center, almost as if they were in the room. Compared to other releases, this reissue has a more refined sound and is certainly worth the investment. 💰
