Coldplay: Parachutes
Original Release: 2000 Paralphone Records
Reissue: 2017 Parlophone Records

When Coldplay released Parachutes, few could have predicted that this melancholic debut would launch one of the biggest bands of the millennium. What began as a collection of intimate songs recorded in "basically a demo room" became a 9× Platinum masterpiece that established the template for 21st-century alternative rock. The album has since gone on to define a generation of pop music fans.
Parachutes became an immediate success, reaching #1 in the UK and eventually earning double platinum certification in the US despite peaking at #51 on the Billboard 200. The album spawned four singles—"Shiver," "Yellow," "Trouble," and "Don't Panic"—with "Yellow" becoming the band's signature song and breakthrough hit.
Critics praised the album's emotional depth and maturity. NME called it "incredible this is a debut album," while Melody Maker hailed it as a "masterpiece" and "a defining musical statement of 2000." The album earned a Mercury Music Prize nomination and established Coldplay as critical darlings before they became global superstars.
Unlike many modern reissues plagued by quality control issues, Parachutes has benefited from consistently excellent vinyl production under Parlophone's oversight. Multiple pressings across different years have maintained high standards, earning praise from collectors and casual listeners alike.
Our review copy, the 2017 180g pressing, represents peak quality for this album. Discogs collectors agree, as many consistently praise its execution: "This is a wonderful edition, the highest quality vinyl. Not a single click, not a single scratch. Just amazing. Thanks Parlophone" and "Outstanding album. One of the best of the 2000s and this is a great pressing. Sounds superb."
The mastering captures the album's dynamic range effectively, with collectors noting "This kind of pressing job is the reason i love vinyl. Rich, balanced and crystal clear sound with no surface noise, crackles or pops at all."
For the album's 20th anniversary, Parlophone released a translucent yellow vinyl edition that maintained the high quality standards while adding visual appeal. However, collectors note that the pressing quality doesn't significantly differ from the standard black version: "Not sure the reason around the hype of the yellow pressing and who decided it should be worth $150. I have both. This one [black] is superior in 2 ways: It's quieter overall, and I bought it for $19."
Parlophone's latest innovation comes with the 2024 EcoRecord pressing using injection molding and eco-vinyl materials. Early reports suggest surprisingly good results despite initial skepticism. However, the new manufacturing process shows quality control inconsistencies: "these ecorecords are a total hit or miss. i've bought 3 so far and 2 were damaged new from the factory."
Collectors consistently report superior quality from European pressings (our review copy) compared to US variants. The European editions, pressed in the EU or Netherlands, typically feature better vinyl compound quality and more careful manufacturing oversight. As one collector noted about the Netherlands pressing: "Beautifully flat and quiet pressing. Agree the soundstage is a little on the narrow side, but a great listen nevertheless."
Parachutes translates exceptionally well to vinyl, with the format enhancing the album's intimate production aesthetic. The sparse arrangements benefit from vinyl's natural dynamics, allowing subtle details like acoustic guitar fingerpicking and ambient studio sounds to emerge clearly.
The Vinyl Verdict
Parachutes represents one of the most reliably excellent vinyl reissues in the modern market. Unlike albums where pressing quality varies dramatically between variants, virtually any legitimate pressing of this album delivers satisfying results.💰
